Q&A
WHAT MAKES NK FURNITURE UNIQUE?
NK Furniture is a local, woman-owned company that focuses on making high-quality, beautifully designed furniture that lasts. I hand select the lumber that goes into each piece, ensuring the grain pattern is beautiful and strong, while minimizing potential waste. It is my mission to make you a well-crafted piece of furniture that you will cherish for a lifetime.
WHAT EFFECT DOES NK FURNITURE HAVE ON THE ENVIRONMENT?
It is very important to me that NK Furniture has a small carbon footprint. Unlike cheaper pieces of furniture you may find in big box stores,
NK Furniture pieces are designed with minimal waste in mind. I also make a point to use finishes with very little, to no Volatile Organic Compounds.
HOW DO NK FURNITURE PIECES DIFFER FROM BIG BOX STORE FURNITURE?
NK Furniture pieces are high quality pieces made to last that fit your needs specifically. They differ in quality of material, customization, and durability from furniture off-the-shelf.
Ultimately, NK Furniture prioritizes quality material, durability, and customization to provide you with a beautifully designed piece of furniture built with years’ worth of fine woodworking knowledge guiding its construction. I don’t skimp on the details, and I don’t make pieces I wouldn’t be proud to own myself.
QUALITY MATERIAL
As a trained furniture maker, I understand the importance of high-quality material. Many big box companies use cheap “rubberwood” or sheet goods and laminate to save costs. However, these materials are composed of chemical binders and wood dust that sags over time and cannot be exposed to water. Some sheet goods such as those with a Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) core can have formaldehyde in it that gives off noxious gas for months or even years after manufacture.
CUSTOMIZATION
Big box companies and even higher-end retailers often don’t offer the sort of customization that a small local shop like NK Furniture can provide. Typically, furniture off-the-shelf has pre-set and limited designs, sizes, finish, and material options. If you’re looking for a furniture piece designed to fit your home, NK Furniture is for you.
DURABILITY
At NK Furniture, every board is checked for checks - natural cracks in the wood - that need to either be reinforced or removed to ensure your piece is strong. I also build furniture with traditional woodworking techniques and wood movement in mind so that your piece can stand the test of time. Big box retailers, however, don’t apply as much care because of their scale of operations, leaving their furniture at risk of durability issues over time.
WHY ARE YOUR PRICES SO HIGH?
My goal is to give you something you will love forever and maybe, one day, pass down. Creating high-quality furniture out of solid wood requires more care and better material than what’s often sold at big box retailers. Solid wood also reacts to the moisture and temperature of its environment so I make sure to build furniture with wood movement in mind, which can require complex, detailed joinery. Unfortunately, as a small shop I just can’t compete with big box store prices, but NK Furniture
won’t cut corners just to turn out a cheaper product.
HOW DOES THE
FULL CUSTOM PROCESS WORK?
WHAT IF I JUST WANT TO CUSTOMIZE A PIECE YOU'VE ALREADY MADE?
No problem! Get in contact with me and I can shoot you a custom quote. Pretty much anything can be customized. Want drawers instead of a door or have specific dimensions? No problem. Want walnut instead of oak? Sure! How about a different finish? Can do.
WHAT MATERIALS
DO YOU USE?
I primarily use hardwood that I handpick at my local lumber yard. When it calls for it however, I will use high-quality plywood.
HOW LONG WILL
IT TAKE?
It depends on the piece, but I provide estimates up-front on how long it will take. You will also have the option to come into the shop when the piece is in the finishing stage to talk about finish and hardware options if you decide to go the custom route. Visit the contact page and let’s start the conversation!
WHAT IF I WANT A PIECE THAT YOU HAVE LISTED ON THE SITE?
Each piece is made to order, get in contact with me to place an order. From there I can tell you how long it will take.
WILL MY PIECE BE DELIVERED TO ME?
I will personally deliver the piece to you and set it up just where you want it. If instillation is required, I will do that too. If you live far outside of the state of Virginia and I am not able to personally make the delivery trip, I will hire a white glove delivery service to ensure that the piece is shipped safely to you. You are also more than welcome to pick up your piece at the shop if you want to avoid the delivery fee or shipping cost.
HOW DOES PAYMENT WORK?
After we’ve hammered out all of the details about the piece you would like built, I’ll send you either a contract or an invoice (depending on if you’re going custom or ordering a piece I’ve already designed) that tells you the total amount due. I only ask for 50% of the amount due to purchase lumber and any other materials required to make your piece. The remaining 50% will be due upon delivery/pickup.
WHAT FORMS OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?
I accept cash, check, and Venmo.
However, I have to charge extra if you choose to use Venmo to cover the service and transaction fees which are 1.9% + $0.10 per transaction.
WHAT IF I DON'T LIVE IN THE RICHMOND AREA?
If you live outside of the Richmond area and are not able to meet in person – or simply don’t want to – I can always provide a design consultation virtually. You may just need a tape measure.
